Holiday Self-Care: 6 Cooking and Self-Care Hacks in Times of Overwhelm

Holiday Self-Care: 6 Cooking and Self-Care Hacks in Times of Overwhelm

I don’t know about you guys but my to do list is killing me these days! It just doesn’t seem to be getting any shorter no matter how many things I cross off. Sometimes I think that there is a little gremlin who sneaks out in the middle of the night to add tasks to the list(s). Stupid gremlin. I keep telling myself to just keep plugging away and it will all get done, somehow, and I know that is true, but there are definitely moments when it just feels like too much.

In the past few months I have read in a number of different places the analogy that self-care is like putting your own oxygen mask on first when a plane is going down—you can’t help anyone else until you are taken care of. As someone who is a chronic “helper” this can be very hard for me to do, but as much as I resist it, I have found that not only do I do better if I practice some self-care in times of stress, but everyone else in my family does too because I am more patient, kind, and efficient. At the same time, though, in these times of craziness I just don’t have time to go get a massage, sleep late, go to a yoga class, or take half a day off for some “me” time. So instead I have been working on finding ways to simplify and create the space for mini-breaks and I wanted to share them with you to help you get through the seasonal insanity, or to store away for a time when you need a boost….

2016 Holiday Gift Guide

gift-553139

As you know, my goal is to help to make cooking more approachable, manageable, and, hopefully, enjoyable. I want to help to make cooking a natural and stress-free part of your daily life. So when I put my holiday gift guide together each year I am not thinking about the coolest gadgets or the hottest new cooking tool, instead I want to help you find the best, hopefully affordable, kitchen supplies that will help to turn your kitchen into a place you enjoy, a place where you want to spend at least a little time, a place where delicious things are made. So this year I am sharing the tools that I couldn’t live without, tools that have made my cooking life happier and more productive. So add these ideas to your own wishlist or get them for someone you love and then enjoy delicious meals for years to come!…

Wild Blueberry Corn Muffins

Wild Blueberry Corn Muffins

“By posting this recipe I am entering a recipe contest sponsored by Wild Blueberries and am eligible to win prizes associated with the contest. I was not compensated for my time.”

Can you believe that Thanksgiving is just around the corner?! It completely snuck up on me. Luckily, this year is kind of like my year off. Our family has a tradition of staying in the DC area for one year and then going up to extended family in New Jersey the next. When it is nearby I am in charge of the Turkey (high stakes cooking!), but on the New Jersey years I am usually assigned a simpler, more transportable set of dishes. This year I am responsible for the corn bread and an appetizer. I will likely bring some classic cornbread so as not to rock the boat too much, but I also like to bring a new and different spin on recipes and now I’ve got two contenders: last week’s feta jalapeño corn muffins and this week’s wild blueberry corn muffins. It is going to be a hard call……

Wild Blueberry Oatmeal Waffles

Wild Blueberry Oatmeal Waffles

“By posting this recipe I am entering a recipe contest sponsored by Wild Blueberries and am eligible to win prizes associated with the contest. I was not compensated for my time.”

When we think of holiday meals we tend to think of the dinners. Those big, heavy meals that leave us feeling comatose and overfull. But what about the other meals on those days? For me, I always try to start the mornings of the big holidays off with a good, healthy breakfast so that I can face the day knowing that I started out on the right foot. I also am fan of a hearty breakfast on those mornings because it helps me to not get too hungry too early in the day, which helps to minimize snacking. So when I was invited through The Recipe Redux to come up with healthy holiday recipes that included frozen wild blueberries my first thought was breakfast. I wanted to create a recipe that would be healthy and hearty, but also one that would feel special enough to use on a holiday morning and I think that these wild blueberry oatmeal waffles fit the bill perfectly!…

3 Simple Steps to Take Now to Prepare for the Holiday Season

3 Simple Steps to Take Now to Prepare for the Holiday Season

We are on the edge of the holiday abyss. That time of year when there is so much happening and so much to do that we can easily lose track of our own self-care. Ironically, it is the time of year when we most need to be feeding ourselves well in order to fight off colds, flus, and other nasty bugs and yet we often find ourselves grabbing take out an extra time (or two or three or five) a week or falling back on convenience foods that we know don’t make us feel that great but are easy and comforting when we are feeling stressed. Yup, we are on the edge of that time. Ugh.

In years past I have shared recipes (like this, this, this, and this) and tricks (like these and these) that can help to boost ourselves up at these stressful times, but this time around I want to get super practical, people. I want to share with you what I decided was going to be the most helpful for me and it isn’t sexy or glitzy, but I am pretty darn sure that it is going to save my butt in the weeks to come… I am organizing and stocking up….

Root Vegetable Latkes

December 3, 2015 By Jessica Braider 1 Comment

Root Vegetable Latkes

Last year around this time I shared my sweet potato latke recipe with you. It is one of my favorites. Very simple, very tasty, and I was excited to make them again for Hanukkah this year. And then my husband announced that he is sick of sweet potatoes. WHAT?! So while I will still make the sweet potato latkes for the rest of us, I thought this might be a nice chance to try something new, and the root vegetable latke was born!

As with my sweet potato version, these latkes are not fried in oil, but rather are baked on a layer of oil. I know that takes away from their traditional latke-ness, but I just have a block about frying foods in my house. And I have to say, the smell of these baking is absolutely awesome—way better than the smell of fried foods that lingers for days…

These latkes are made with carrots, parsnips, and onions, so they are quite sweet, but also lighter than standard latkes. They go really nicely with sour cream or plain Greek yogurt—the sweet and sour. You can also make them even more interesting and exciting by adding one of the optional spices—cumin, chili powder, and za’atar would all be awesome….

Sweet Potato Latkes and Changes in the New Year

December 17, 2014 By Jessica Braider Leave a Comment

Sweet Potato Latkes and Changes in the New Year

Hanukkah started last night. In our inter-faith household this is a time of great busyness and excitement. Lighting the candles, favorite foods, festive songs, decorating the tree, time with family and loved ones, and (too many) gifts are only some of the reasons that this time of year is a favorite for everyone in our family.

It is also a time of an onslaught of not-so-healthy foods, many of which are absolutely delicious. So last night I set out to try to bring some more sustenance to our dinner table as we celebrated the first night of Hanukkah. Now, before I dive right into the recipe I want to offer a disclaimer. I know that in order to commemorate the miracle of the oil lasting for eight nights the latkes are meant to be fried in oil but, to be totally honest, I can’t handle the smell of fried food that is left lingering in my kitchen for days. So this year I tried something different. I baked my latkes, with a layer of oil underneath. This is probably sacrilegious and unacceptable for some, but for our family it worked amazingly well. So well, in fact, that while I thought I had made enough for leftovers for tonight, my husband ended up having to show great restraint in leaving the last one to go in our older son’s lunch today as he begged and pleaded for this to happen….
